The magnitude of the earth drama that is literally “under foot” for every Ka-'uan, night and day, was a dominant factor in conditioning the character of the people of Ka-'u. Small wonder that its population became inured to cataclysms of cosmic dimensions, and to the jolts and reverberations of earthquakes. There lies the tip of the most vigorous lateral root of the tree that is Hawai'i. South-east of the shores of Ka-'u and Puna new land is growing, as shown by seismographs and by soundings.
